GET YOUR BEST NIGHT’S SLEEP EVER

Lullabies aren’t just for kids, you know. They also work for adults trying to get to sleep, only they vary slightly as we get older. Instead of counting sheep, there are some tried and true secrets for a full night’s sleep that don’t involve sleeping pills. Are you ready to become a member of the deep sleep club? Most people have insomnia at some point in their lives. Even if you’re tired, you may still struggle to fall and stay asleep. You may need to start a before-bedtime ritual. Exercising during the day—but not just before bed—helps us to sleep better at night, of course. So does avoiding heavy meals just before bed. If you’ve ever eaten something rich just before dozing off, you’ll notice exceptionally vivid dreams. Getting rid of all screens at least 1 hour before bed is very beneficial, and books are an ideal way to do just that. You don’t have to make it through a dense Russian novel to fall asleep, but reading before bed certainly helps.

Did you know that showering in the dark can reset your nervous system? There’s no way one can sleep with all the stimulation we experience on any given day, unless you’re simply dead tired. This is why taking a hot bath or shower before bed is ideal. It relaxes tired, taut muscles and quite literally washes the day away. An aromatic bubble bath quite literally absolves us of the day’s transgressions and stimuli. Mariah Carey apparently sleeps with twenty humidifiers while Sydney Sweeney completely avoids coffee and Tom Cruise snoozes in a “snoratorium” (a soundproof room that relieves others of his loud snoring). Creating the right atmosphere for sleep is ideal. While it would be wonderful if all we heard at night were crickets and wind rustling the curtains, that’s simply not realistic. A white noise machine is a must for those living in cities, with noisy neighbors, or simply anyone who wants to block out reality in order to get forty winks. Making our bed, and the surrounding room, as cozy as possible is also hugely important. The right pillow can make a world of difference, and some people absolutely swear by weighted blankets.

Aromatherapy helps, too (along with other natural supplements). For instance, Mr. Sandman loves magnesium! Because Epsom salts are full of magnesium, salt baths help us get a better night’s rest. A silk sleep mask, pillow slips misted with lavender, accompanying room spray, and socks help us all feel warm and insulated. Seriously. While it’s suggested to sleep in a cool room, cold feet are a no-go for a solid eight hours. Another added tip is to put bay leaves in your socks to relieve muscle and joint pain in ankles and knees. While this may or may not be effective, we know for a fact that soaking our feet or entire body in magnesium-rich bath salts helps de-stress our mind and bodies (magnesium spray and supplements help, too). Nabila K’s Organic Lavender and Chamomile Dead Sea bath salts are ideal for creating a languid bathtime experience that will help you relax and unwind.

Chamomile essential oil helps calm the nervous system because it is filled with a flavonoid called “apigenin” that promotes relaxation. Chamomile tea is also effective (and tastes better than warm milk). Lavender is the soothing herb with the most hypnotic, warm fragrance. So, how does it work exactly? “Lavender contains linalool and linalyl acetate, which interact with the brain to promote relaxation. These compounds help reduce anxiety and lower heart rate, preparing your body for sleep. Studies suggest that inhaling lavender essential oil can activate neurotransmitters that signal relaxation.” With the help of Nabila K’s lavender essential oil—also available in a bubble bath preparation-you can finally catch some Z’s, will feel restored, and won’t have anyone remarking you woke up on the wrong side of the bed.
