FALL INTO AUTUMN

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald

Fall is the perfect season to begin anew and refresh your routine. Shorter days, cooler weather, and back-to-school all beg for lifestyle adjustments here and there. There are lots of ways you can elevate your everyday agenda that include self-care, beautifying your surroundings, and focusing on productivity. A fall reset is essential because, whether we like it or not, everything around us is changing, and it’s time to embrace it. “Austice” (the combination of “autumn” and “auspice”) is defined as “a wistful omen of the first sign of autumn.” This is that indefinable time where one may feel hopeful and slightly melancholy simultaneously. As the first golden-hued leaf kisses the ground, we know summer is officially over, and it’s time to ease into a new season.

Start with slow mornings to soak up as much sunshine as possible. With shorter days, it seems as if, once a day’s work is done, it’s time for bed. Kissing those long evenings goodbye can be a difficult transition for some—and less sunshine can pose the risk of a serotonin dip—but accepting change is the beauty of autumn. Realign your day by doing what you enjoy in the morning rather than waiting until the evening, and open your curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. Start with your favorite morning coffee, tea, lemon water, or green juice and set aside time to stretch, breathe, and make plans. Writing lists is an effective way to plan your schedule and crossing chores off your roster is incredibly satisfying.

Reserve evenings for passive, cozy pastimes and earlier bedtimes. Use the extra time indoors to catch an episode of your latest favorite show/podcast or squeeze in a few chapters of leisure reading. Make a book list for autumn and take a stab at consuming more long-form content. Instead of doom scrolling, start a novel or create something. Early Halloween costume ideas, anyone? This is when refreshing your environment comes in handy. You’ll appreciate new linens, plush throw pillows, blankets, and bedding more than ever when you’re spending time curled up on cool evenings. Embrace autumnal colors, scents, vibes, and produce. Add apples, pomegranates, and pumpkins to your diet while incorporating deeper shades of crimson and russet to your wardrobe and décor. Light candles that smell of pumpkin spice, cinnamon, and other earthly delights that conjure autumn. Collect gourds, potted mums, and other pieces of nature to embellish your surroundings. This is the time of year to observe nature, be still, and reflect on the year. Because the fall season is a time for change, practice letting go by reaping the harvest and watching the leaves as they turn.

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” – Oscar Wilde

Tighten your schedule; make proper rest and relaxation a priority. Recharge and reset by taking walks on crisp days when the foliage-dappled sunshine is at its peak. Meet friends for coffee to catch up. Making small tweaks to your wardrobe is not only necessary, but also enjoyable. Putting away summer gear in exchange for chic layers, sweaters, blazers, and scarves is a treat for fashion lovers. Switching up your makeup for a darker aesthetic—smoky eyes, deep red and plum lips—is a must for autumn. Switch up skincare by adding thicker, more luxurious creams and body butters to your routine. Try classic clay face masks to freshen and reinvigorate skin by cleansing and tightening pores. Because the air is cooler and we’ll be spending more time indoors, our skin may need an extra boost of Vitamin C and more intense moisturizer (for days as well as nights). Nabila K has everything you need—from ambient home décor and perfumes to makeup and skincare—to make this fall season your best yet.
